A free, no-signup tool to help restaurant owners and food entrepreneurs price their dishes correctly.
MenuProfitCalculator.com is a free online tool designed to help restaurant owners, café managers, catering businesses, and home cooks calculate the real cost of their dishes and determine the right selling price.
Pricing a menu is one of the most important — and most overlooked — decisions in any food business. Price too low and you lose money on every sale. Price too high and customers go elsewhere. Our calculator helps you find the right balance, instantly.
MenuProfitCalculator.com is completely free. You don't need to create an account, enter payment details, or sign up for anything. Just open the calculator and start entering your ingredients.
Your data stays in your browser — we don't store your recipes or ingredient costs on our servers. Every calculation happens locally on your device, so your recipes remain private.
MenuProfitCalculator.com is built and maintained by Eight-14, an independent studio that builds focused, free tools for people running small businesses. We believe that every restaurant owner — regardless of budget — should have access to the same financial tools that large hospitality chains use to manage their costs.
We're continuously improving the calculator based on feedback from the food business community. If you have suggestions, corrections, or questions, get in touch — we read every message and reply from a real person, not a bot.
Most restaurant owners learn food cost management the hard way — by losing money before they understand where it went. The concepts are not complicated, but applying them consistently in a busy kitchen environment requires a simple, accessible tool. Spreadsheets work but are slow to set up and easy to get wrong. Expensive restaurant management software is overkill for operators who just need to cost a dish quickly.
We built MenuProfitCalculator.com to fill that gap: a focused, free tool that does one thing well. Enter your ingredients, get your food cost, see your recommended price. No subscriptions, no setup, no learning curve.
The restaurant industry operates on notoriously thin margins — typically 3–9% net profit for full-service restaurants. Every percentage point of food cost improvement goes directly to the bottom line. Yet many independent operators still set menu prices by guessing, by copying competitors, or by intuition alone. Our goal is to make data-driven pricing accessible to every food business, not just those with dedicated finance teams.
The calculator uses your actual ingredient costs to calculate the real food cost of a dish, then compares that to your selling price to show whether your pricing is on target, too low, or too high.
You enter each ingredient with the amount used per portion, the package size, and the cost of that package. The calculator automatically works out the cost per unit and multiplies by the amount used in your recipe. Once all ingredients are entered, it sums the total ingredient cost per portion.
From there, you set your target food cost percentage — the proportion of the selling price you want ingredient costs to represent. The calculator shows your recommended selling price, your current profit per dish, and your overall profit margin. The interactive price slider lets you test different price points instantly and see the effect on margin in real time.
The impact calculator goes further: enter how many portions you sell per day and it shows the monthly revenue and profit impact of your current pricing — and what you gain from hitting your target food cost percentage.
Beyond the calculator, we publish practical guides on food cost management, menu pricing, and restaurant profitability. These are written for working operators — not academics or consultants — with real examples and actionable advice you can apply the same day.
Our users include independent restaurant and café owners pricing their menus for the first time, experienced operators reviewing their costs after ingredient price increases, catering businesses calculating event profitability, food truck operators managing tight margins, home bakers and food entrepreneurs working out whether their pricing is sustainable, and hospitality students learning about food cost management.
The calculator is designed to be useful whether you are costing a single dish or reviewing an entire menu — and whether you are just starting out or have been running a food business for years.
Yes — the calculator supports GBP (£), EUR (€), and USD ($). It is used by food businesses across the UK, Ireland, and internationally. The food cost percentage benchmarks in our guides are based on UK industry data, though the principles apply universally.
Currently the calculator does not store recipes between sessions — all data is cleared when you close the browser tab. This keeps the tool simple and ensures your recipe data stays private. We may add optional local saving in a future update.
Absolutely. The calculator works equally well for a home baker calculating the cost of a cake, a market trader pricing their products, or a restaurant owner costing a full menu. The underlying maths is the same regardless of scale.
The calculator is as accurate as the data you put in. If you enter your real supplier prices and actual portion weights, the result is a precise food cost calculation. The most common source of inaccuracy is forgetting to account for prep yield — the usable proportion of an ingredient after trimming and preparation. Our recipe costing tips guide covers this in detail.
It takes less than 2 minutes and you don't need to sign up for anything.
